There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors.

It was early, real early.

-They just kids, Sheriff.
-Their age don't enter into it. I done told'em boys to go. They had 'nuff time.
The Sheriff opened the door and went outside. He could see the nailed-shut windows of the saloon's top floor, down on the corner. Slim had done it to pretend no action was goin' on on the rooms above his saloon. As if whores couldn't work by the candle light...
The Sheriff stepped into the saloon and tipped his hat.
-Mornin' Slim.
-Mornin' Sheriff.
-Any of the girls upstairs?
-They all down here, cleanin' up, Sheriff.
-You tell'em to stay put, and get me a double bourbon.
The Sheriff went up the stairs and opened the door to the big room.
-Jim,you and your boys better be out this town before I finish my drink downstairs.
Jim laughed.
-Cum on now, Sheriff, it's real early and we need to get some rest. Let us sleep and maybe I'll go and talk to you after lunch.
The Sheriff closed the door shut and went back downstairs. He finished his drink, sighed and asked Slim for another. He walked back up the stairs and opened the door to the big room. The light from the lower floor and the candles in the hall was just enough to tell the beds and chairs from the naked walls. There were five of 'em. Jim's bed was just next to the door. The Sheriff cocked the hammer of his right-hand revolver and put it against Jim's head. Jim startled and sat up.
-Don't say a word, boy.
The Sheriff let off four rounds with the other gun, one to each bed. At each shot he could feel Jim's head shake at the end of his right-hand gun. Dark stains appeared on the four beds. No words were spoken.
The Sheriff closed the door behind him and locked it. He had Slim bring him some boards and nails and nailed the door shut. Everything was still silent inside the room.
The Sheriff went down, downed his second double bourbon and got out of the saloon.
Jim was a healthy boy, no reason to expect any fainting or heart stroke, and when he got tired of tryin' to kick the windows and door open he would know exactly what to do. Then Slim would have the girls clean up and dump the bodies out of town and everything would be ready and shiny for when the first customers of the evening came.

It was still early, real early.
